Bridgwater Film Night at the Engine Room
Thursday June 7th
Doors Open at 7pm Film Starts at 7:30pm
The inaugural Bridgwater Film Night in association with Bridgwater Cultural Partners and hosted by The Engine Room will shine a light on an award winning story set during a significant time in Somerset’s recent history.
The Levelling (2016) is an emotional journey that follows the homecoming of trainee vet Clover Catto (Ellie Kendrick) as she returns to Somerset in the wake of the 2014 floods and the tragic apparent suicide of her brother Harry Aubrey (Joe Blackmore). Forced to confront her already estranged father (David Troughton) Clover faces a childhood home forever changed by the devastation of the flooding and a struggle to come to terms her family, the loss of her brother and herself.
The events that serve as the backdrop to this harrowing tale will resonate with many people in the area and this film was chosen because of that local connection. Bridgwater town was less directly affected by the floods of 2014 so The Levelling offers a window in to the events and their impact on the surrounding rural area. Despite being a work of fiction the way in which this film is shot and the use of a lesser known cast give it a distinctly natural feeling of realism.
The Levelling has been nominated for several awards such as the Sutherland Award (2016), The Audience Award at Glasgow Film Festival (2017) and The British Independent Film Award (2016). In 2017 Hope Dickson won the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Writer (Film/Television) for this outstanding depiction of a family in crisis.
Come along and join us in support of this incredible local film, hosted at a unique local venue by a team of enthusiastic film lovers.
